Controlled substances cannot be prescribed via telehealth under any circumstances.

The PMHNP should verify applicable DEA, state, and federal regulations regarding telehealth prescribing of controlled substances, which have evolved significantly. Considerations include whether an initial in-person evaluation is required, proper patient identification, state-specific telehealth prescribing limitations, and PDMP checks.

Telehealth prescribing of controlled substances follows identical rules as in-person prescribing.

Only Schedule IV and V medications can be prescribed via telehealth.
