What the AANPCB PMHNP-C exam covers
The AANPCB PMHNP-C exam (first administered April 2024) is a 150-question, 3-hour certification exam from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. It is organized around four process domains (Assess 33%, Diagnose 21%, Plan 26%, and Evaluate 20%) and seven knowledge areas: scientific foundations, pharmacology, nonpharmacological therapies, psychotherapies, assessment and diagnosis, care practices, and professional role.
Questions are distributed by patient age: 50% adults, 20% elderly, 16% adolescents, 8% pre-adolescents, and 6% infants/children. Clinical disorders are organized into three frequency tiers, with mood, anxiety, trauma, and substance use disorders tested most heavily.
Our practice questions match the AANPCB's emphasis on applied clinical decision-making. Each question presents a patient scenario requiring you to integrate history, presentation, risk factors, and evidence, the way the actual exam does.
