Raise the concern. Research documents racial disparities in psychiatric diagnosis. Examine personal biases, advocate for structured diagnostic processes to reduce bias, and raise the concern with clinic leadership
This is the ethically and clinically appropriate response. Research has extensively documented racial disparities in psychiatric diagnosis, particularly the overdiagnosis of schizophrenia in Black patients. The PMHNP should: examine their own diagnostic practices for bias, advocate for structured diagnostic tools and processes that reduce subjective bias, raise the concern with clinic leadership for systemic review, and support training in cultural competency and implicit bias awareness.
