A 38-year-old man is referred by his primary care physician for alcohol use disorder. He drinks 6-8 beers nightly and has an elevated GGT but denies that his drinking is a problem, stating he works hard and deserves to relax. He is ambivalent about change. His therapist responds: 'On one hand, you feel that drinking helps you unwind after a long day. On the other hand, you mentioned that your wife has been upset about your drinking and your doctor is concerned about your liver. How do you make sense of those two sides?'
